Yerba Maté is a popular herbal infusion throughout South America. It is energizing, sweet, grassy and and refreshing drink. The drink is relatively high in caffeine, similar to that of mild coffee. However research has shown that the caffeine in Yerba Maté is delivered through the blood stream giving your energy levels a gentle rise and fall; whereas coffee attacks your central nervous system giving you a quick boost in energy resulting in jitters and an inevitable crash. The caffeine in Yerba Maté has been dubbed mateine. Yerba Maté is also rich in vitamins B and C, potassium, antioxidants and zinc.
Region: Argentina
Steeping Guide:
Teaware: Calabash Gourd and Bombilla
Amount: Fill the gourd almost full with Yerba Maté.
Temperature: 80°c (176°F)
*These instructions are based on the traditional style of brewing Yerba Maté; the tea can also be made in a standard cup. If this is your preferred method of brewing we recommend you use 2 teaspoons of Yerba Maté and steep for 3-5 minutes. The steeping time can be made shorter or longer based on your taste but we do not recommend adjusting the temperature of the water. If the water is too hot the tea will become very bitter.*
